About Crouch End
Crouch End evolved as a hamlet on the old medieval route from London to the north of England. During these early formative years, it was governed as part of Hornsey which became a parish in around 1300. This rural area which was heavily wooded, was made up of farms and villas, one of which can be traced to Crouch Hall, probably built in mid 17th Century and located at the crossroads of what came to be recognised as
Crouch End.
Crouch End remained its rural status until the later part of the 19th century, possibly due to the lack of adequate sewerage. Large parts of the area remained in private ownership, inhibiting expansion and development of this area.
The coming of the railway significantly changed the area. By 1887 there were seven railway stations in close proximity.
Crouch End became a prosperous middle class suburb due to an arrival of mainly clerical workers who found commuting to the city easy and within there social standing. The large old houses which once portrayed the rural area were re-developed and replaced with comfortable, affordable middle class housing, and incorporated new public parks and number of new roads and avenues, which included Elder Avenue and Weston Park.
Crouch End expanded significantly in the late Victorian period when most of its present-day streets were built up.

Crouch End saw more mixed social grouping emerging and requirement for a London wide provision of social housing saw the growth of council homes in and around
Crouch End. The area gained a reputation as a student bedsit land for several decades into the early 80's.
