Greater London is the administration sub-division enveloping London the UK’s capital. The area was conceived and officially created in mid 1960’s and includes the City of London, Middle Temple and Inner Temple, and thirty two London boroughs. The
Greater London area also forms the London region and the London European Parliament constituency.
The region accounts for the highest GDP per capita in the United Kingdom. It geographical covers approximately 1579 km2 (610 square miles). In 2006 a mid-year estimated population of 7,512,400 was recorded. It is bounded by the Home Counties of Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Kent. The highest recorded point in the
Greater London area can be found in the North Downs on the boundary with Kent. Westerham Heights, stands at 245 metres (804 ft).
The term
Greater London was in use before the mid 1960’s and was used to refer to a diversely defined area. The area was larger than the County of London and often mirrored the Metropolitan Police District.
Greater London was created to improve the harmonisation between the 32 local authorities and the Mayor of London, whose role was to give London a single person to represent it. It is the Mayors responsibility to propose policies and recommend the GLA's budget. The Mayor is also responsible for making appointments to London’s strategic executive board, this includes the following areas, Transport for London and the London Development Agency.
The principal purpose of the London Assembly is to hold the Mayor of London accountable, by scrutinising their activities and the decisions made. The GLA is based in City Hall, a new building on the south bank of the River Thames, next one of London’s most renowned landmarks, Tower Bridge. Ken Livingstone was a former Mayor, the current and presiding mayor is Boris Johnson.
The GLA differs greatly from the Corporation of the City of London, with its largely ceremonial Lord Mayors, which control the square mile of the City, the capital’s main financial centre. The GLA has evolved into a modern constitution; whereas the corporation has scarcely changed since the Middle Ages.
