The village was in all probability part of the lands allotted to the Abbey of St Albans, although actual records are missing, presumed lost. At the time of the Norman Conquest the manor was given to William's half brother Robert, the Count of Mortain who let it to Ralf. The present village was developed around this manor and was located on the old road from London to Berkhamsted, which continued on to the Midlands of England.
In the later quarter of the 13th century the manor was acquired by Queen Eleanor. A palace and deer park was built on the hill above the village which gave the village the “soubriquet” Kings. The village, once the setting of
Kings Langley Palace, a Royal residence of the Plantagenet kings of England, was also the location of a priory which was founded next to the palace; its remains can still be seen today.
All Saints Church was constructed during the 14th century, on a site where an earlier church has stood. The internment of King Richard II occurred at this church for a time after his likely murder at Pontefract Castle in the early 15th century, and later removed to Westminster Abbey. The remains of Edmund of Langley, who died in1402, the fifth son of Edward III and first Duke of York, still remain in the memorial chapel.
The Grand Union canal circa 1797 and the London and Birmingham Railway circa 1838, which became the West Coast Main Line, pass to the east of the village near
Kings Langley railway station. Many businesses located near the station on the Home Park Industrial Estate which is also plays host to the West Herts college, Construction and Engineering Centre. During the Twentieth century several housing developments have caused the village to expand, spreading to either side of the main A41 road. This main trunk road has been re-routed to the west of the village; the High Street now only has to cater for local traffic for the first time in centuries. More recently a Roman villa has been discovered and excavated to the south of the existing village.
