About Letchworth
Letchworth Garden City is ideal for walks and picnics which is an ideal place to admire the natural beauty of one of our stunning
London Escorts who would be more than willing to join you. They would also enjoy the various leisure activities, including a heated outdoor swimming pool, bowls, putting and tennis.
In 1905 and 1908 there were Cheap Cottages exhibitions which were sponsored by the Daily Mail which attracted 60,000 visitors which then led to the launching of the Ideal Home Exhibition. The Ban on selling alcohol was introduced, but despite the ban, the pub with no beer opened in 1907 known as The Skittles Inn. Later there were The Three Horseshoes, and The Fox which all continued to operate to this day. New inns also sprang up on the borders of the town, one such example being the Wilbury Hotel which was just outside the town's border. The alcohol ban was finally lifted in 1958, which resulted in the first public house in the centre of the Garden City. Today the town centre has less than half-a-dozen pubs which is a remarkably low number of a town of its size. One of the most important industries to arrive in the town was the Spirella Building which was completed in 1920 as the famous Spirella Corset Company's factory.
It was commissioned to design a state-of-the-art factory which provided a great environment in which his workers could be happy and productive and it became known as The Factory of Beauty. During the 50’s and 60’s the people that worked at Spirella’s helped each other and if there was a difficult job others would lend a hand. People were very happy and
Letchworth was a lovely area to live. In the midst of all the noise of the machines, the workers of the factory were very happy and would all sing along to the radio. The company proudly produced customised corsets and made garments for the rich and famous, including Marilyn Monroe and Mae West.
In 1909, the first cinema opened outside London, the Palace Cinema, in
Letchworth. The Palace was refurbished in 1924. Six years later, on a site a few yards away, the Broadway Cinema was created. The cinema opened on 26 August 1936 with a black tie gala screening of “Follow the Feet” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The Palace Cinema in
Letchworth closed its doors on 31 December 1977. The Broadway Cinema closed its doors temporarily at the end of February 1996 with a special screening of “Windbag the Sailor” starring Will Hay. The Broadway Cinema story reached a new climax on 12 July 1996 with the re-opening of the luxurious 1936 art deco Broadway Cinema situated in the heart of the world's first Garden City.
Sightings of the black squirrels were originally reported in the area of Norton Common and later the centre of the town from the 1950s. Since then there has been a gradual spread onto the Jackmans estate by the 1980s. Then there have been further reports of black squirrels in the neighbouring town of Hitchin.
