About Ampthill
Ampthill is situated between Bedford and Luton, it is a small town and a civil parish within Bedfordshire with a population of approximately 6,000. There is a regular market every Thursday and this market has taken place for centuries, it was King Henry III who gave the right to hold a market on Thursdays back in 1242. In the Domesday Book, Ampthill is entered as 'Ammetelle' in 1086 and the landholder is names as Nigel del la Vast.
The town's original name is traced to Anglo-Saxon origin and the first settlement was named 'Aemethyll' which literally translated means 'ant-heap' or ant infested hill'. A regular visitor to Ampthill was King Henry VIII and it was there that Katherine of Aragon lived from 1531 until Henry VIII divorced her in 1533. There was a castle in Ampthill which was built in the 15th century by Sir John Cornwall, the money to build this came from ransoms after the Battle of Agincourt. Although the castle has now disappeared there are some intriguing remnants of castle life such as the local ponds of which Westminster pond is one, which it is said was built to supply the castle with regular supplies of fish.
In the mid-1780s, John Fitzpatrick who's title was Lord Ossory of Ampthill Park led a campaign to improve the town centre. During that time a new clock tower was built and the current market place was created and also a water pump was erected. Ampthill today still trades on its "historic market town" reputation and this serves as a commercial centre for surrounding villages. There are a number of lively pubs and a great variety of restaurants in the town together with a selection of small independent specialist shops.
West Minster Pond is a wonderful place for fishing and jogging and is located on the outskirts of Ampthill, rumour says that the pond is cursed and haunted by a variety of paranormal activity; many villagers have reported seeing white lights wandering around the wood, which then mysteriously disappear into thin air.
