Saxon invaders settled in Biggleswade in the 5th century and the name Biggleswade is thought to be derived from Biceil which is an Anglo-Saxon personal name and Waed, the Saxon word for ford. In 2001 a gold coin bearing the name Coenwulf was discovered on a footpath beside the River Ivel, this is only the eigth known Anglo-Saxon gold coin dating to the middle to late Anglo-Saxon period and proved to be quite a find as it initially sold to an American collector, Allan Davisson for the sum of £230,000. The British Government were keen to save it for the British public and put an export ban in place and then in February 2006 the coin was bought by the British Museum for the sum of £357,832 making it the most expensive British coin purchased to date.
