Bolnhurst was listed in the Domesday Book as Bulehestre, or Bolehestre and at that time was owned by the Abbot of Thorney, it continued to be the property of the Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The village has one public house, namely The Plough which dates back to Tudor times. Bolnhurst plays host annually to a charity rally known as the Bolnhurst Vintage and Country Fayre, this is for tractors, cars and other vintage vehicles. This rally started some years ago when a group of local farmers and tractor boys got together over a weekend to show off their vintage farm vehicles and steam engines. The money that was raised that weekend was donated to a local charity and because a good time was had by all, arrangements were made to repeat the rally the following year. Since then the Bolnhurst Vintage & Country Fayre has gone from strength to strength. It has grown to include vintage cars/heavy goods vehicles and static displays together with various local craft stalls. Entertainment has been laid on every year in the main arena, including tractor games and sheepdog displays. The community of enthusiasts has grown to such a degree that there are now up to 4 generations of families who return to spend the weekend reminiscing about the good old days. Every effort is made by the Rally committee to retain the original atmosphere and camaraderie that lead to the first get together all those years ago and despite a new younger generation of committee members, the tradition is maintained.
There are a number of attractions in the surrounding areas of Bolnhurst which are well worth a visit; one of those attractions is Danish Camp. This historical site has always been known as Danish Camp and was opened to the public in August 2007. History tells of the Danes sailing from The Wash to Willington, where they made a homestead and repair harbour. The layout of the land that can be seen today certainly suggests a substantial settlement. The log cabin at Danish Camp is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Willington, Bedford. A Terrace has been added to the log cabin so that visitors could come to Danish Camp throughout the year. This terrace provided much needed room for dog walkers, group visits and has since been used for many events and celebrations. Last year a very exciting project was completed, the launch of 'The Artful Dodger', this is a wide-beamed steel boat. This vessel has been lovingly restored with a contemporary feel in order to take passengers for river trips up and down the local river, and for longer trips to and from Bedford. There is also a new river route along the Bedford River, with a mooring opposite the Swan Hotel, by the Town Bridge. As The Artful Dodger is fully licensed, passengers can enjoy a glass of wine or real ale on board as well as a clotted cream tea or a full celebration. It is also perfect for corporate events and meetings. Not many people would even realise that Dutch Camp is there, so take a look and discover a local gem.
