Leagrave Park is home to a protected monument, this is the spot of the first settlement in the area which was called Wauluds Bank. This is a Neolithic D-shaped enclosure consisting of a bank and external ditch of around 7 hectares, historical findings at this site have included flint arrow heads and Neolithic grooved ware. Later in history this site was re-used during the Iron Age and also during the Roman occupation.
The manor of Leagrave was held by the Lucy family during the period from 1305 to 1455 and it was the Lucys that gave their name to the original Luton which was known as Lewsey. The villages of Leagrave and Limbury were formed into the ecclesiastical parish of Holy Trinity in 1866 and then later under the Local Government Act of 1894, Leagrave civil parish was formed in 1896.
The First World War brought some significant changes to Leagrave, the Hewlett and Blondeau Aircraft company opened a factory in Leagrave and this was called The Omnia Works, this company was managed by Hilda Hewlett who actually lived on site. During the war this factory employed approximately 700 people and produced more than 800 aircraft which was of huge benefit to the war effort. In 1920 the factory closed and the factory site was sold to Electrolux in 1926.
During the period of time between the First and Second World Wars the area grew significantly and in 1928 Leagrave parish was abolished and the boundaries of Luton extended to include Leagrave, together with Stopsley and Limbury. During the 1930 the expansion of Luton was extensive and a considerable amount of the housing in Leagrave dates from the 1920s and 1930s.
Until recently the Electrolux company was a major employer in the area, today much of the old factory site has been sold off for re-development into housing. The train and road connections for the area are excellent to both London and the north, this has led to Leagrave becoming a very popular commuter area.
There is plenty of entertainment in the area, with a number of nightclubs, bars and really excellent restaurants of many different cuisines. In Leagrave there are Indian, Caribbean and Chinese restaurants all offering superb menus.
