Leighton Buzzard is home to a network of historic tunnels which exist under the High Street and these are believed to date back to medieval times. It does not appear that the tunnels have been investigated in full but one tunnel is easily accessed from the cellarage of Wilkinson Estate Agents which is located at the top of Market Square. The cellar, which was probably an Ice House extends some 16 feet under the road and although it appears to be in reasonable condition it is sealed from public access for safety reasons. It is thought that this network of tunnels was built during the medieval times for people who were concerned about religious persecution.
