Odell is a very old village which dates back to before the Roman invasion, there is evidence of a farm which pre-dates that era. The evidence shows that the farm was abandoned in the 4th century and it them remained unoccupied until about the 6th or 7th century. Where the present village is situated today was part of five hides that were owned during the 11th century by a thane of King Edward the Confessor, who owned most of the land at that time. The village was then known as Wadelle or Wadehelle, the meaning of this name is thought to be the hill where woad grows, woad was an important source of blue dye, which has been thought to be used to decorate the faces and bodies by the ancient Britons. After the battle of Hastings in 1066, the Normans with William the Conqueror taking the lead, took control of the whole of England and in many cases lands were passed onto fellow soldiers in battle.
Although there is evidence that the church in Odell dates back to as early as 1220, the All Saints church of today dates back to the 15th century, a clock was added to the church tower in 1820 and in 1958 a sixth bell was added to the ring.
Although Odell is a small village it has had its time of fame, between 1975 and 1981 both Odell Castle and All Saints church were host to the Greenbelt Festival and this was attended by about 15000 visitors. Also Odell village was one of the first villages in England to have its own website and this still is online today. All Saints church is visited by many people from around the world who want to trace their ancestry to Odell.
