About Pavenham
Pavenham is an attractive village with many stone buildings resting beside the River Ouse in Bedfordshire. Having a current population of around 600 residents. The village has delightful riverside walks where ducks and swans linger, or why not enjoy the amazing Jacobean carvings at the church of St Peter, with an impressive tower and five bells. St Peters church can be found about 500 yards up Church Lane on the right. St Peter's is a fine and fascinating old 13th century (possibly 12th century) stone church that has examples of three phases of medieval architecture, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular. Later additions and repairs have altered the building further. The 8 sided spires sit on a square tower with no parapet. There are 5 bells within the tower. Inside there is an organ loft and gallery at the west end. Clear windows (only one has stained glass) give plenty of light to the interior but an unusual feature is the carved oak 17th century wall panelling obtained from other properties and from furniture panels and installed during Victorian times. Also look out for a Green Man corbel. Floor levels vary and no two walls are parallel. Stone 13th century coffin slabs can be found in the gently sloping floor of the chancel.
Although an ancient building, St Peter's has been fitted in recent times with a disabled standard toilet and a kitchen area and an effective heating system. A sound system is installed. It is surrounded by a spacious churchyard which is still open to new burials.
