Lambourn was at one time connected by railway with its own station but the line was one that was closed following the famous Beaching report in 1960. If you now need a train then your nearest station will be Hungerford some 10 miles up the road.
Lambourn is best known today for it horse racing connection. The racing connection began in the 18th century when the Earl of Craven held racing meetings on Weathercock Hill.
Regular race meetings on the Lambourn Downs then followed. In the 1840s some owners moved their horses from Newmarket to Lambourn, as the ground at Newmarket was too firm and caused the horses to break down. Lambourn is now the mecca for horses and trainers alike. Many famous training stables have sprung up around the downs. The well drained, spongy grass, the open downs and long flats have made Lambourn ideal for training racehorses, it has become a fashionable training centre and has an Equine hospital and training pools to meet the needs of the many horses that are now trained in the area. There have followed many Lambourn Derby and Grand National winners with famous jockeys all connected to Lambourn. In 2006 The Jockey Club purchased 500 acres of land in the valley, its first investment outside Newmarket since its creation.
Lambourn is also famous for its Seven Burrows. There are actually over thirty Bronze Age burial mounds forming a large prehistoric cemetery. Some dating back to 4000BC, which makes them 2000 years old. A small hoard of Bronze Age gold was found in 2004, consisting of bracelets and armlets and was declared as treasure at an inquest that followed.
Lambourns colourful history also includes The Anarchy in 1142, the English Civil War in 1644, The Luddites and Captain Swing riots in 1832 and many more events throughout history that have moulded this Berkshire village into the interesting place that it is today.
