Langley also known as Langley Marish was not always as it is today. The church of St Mary the Virgin in the parish is a grade one listed building and now houses the Kidderminster Library, it was given to the village by Sir John Kidderminster, who also endowed the surviving almshouses of 1617 in the village. Sir John Kidderminsters own house Langley Park was brought by Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, he then demolished the house and rebuilt to the designs by Stiff Ledbetter and completed it in the year of his death in 1758. Langley Hall is now part of East Berkshire college.
The writer John Pudley was also a native of Langley Marish and his father farmed the land that later become Langley aerodrome. The Hawker aircraft company bought Parlaunt farm at Langley in 1938 and built a major factory and airfield there. Many aircraft were manufactured there during World War two including the Hawker Hurricane, the Tempest and the Sea Fury. The final Hurricane, a Mk2c was completed there on 15th September 1944 and it still flies today with the Battle of Britain Memorial flyers. The Hawker Tornado, Typhoon, Tempest, Fury, Sea Fury and the General Aircraft Hamilcar X tank-carrying glider, built in 1945 all made their first flights from Langley Airfield. The hawker factory closed in 1958 with all production staff being transferred to Dunsford Aerodrome, Surrey. If you look carefully you will find road names such as Spitfire close and Hurricane Way, all reminders of the towns aviation past
The Ford Motor Company purchased the land around Langley Marish in 1949, then bought the entire site in 1959. The old aircraft factory was then used for the manufacture of commercial vehicles. The Ford Transit was built here until production was transferred to Southampton in the 1980s.
