There are many things to explore in Reading as there are 850 listed buildings and structures, two national trails and seven miles of river frontage with many places of interest to visit during your stay. This is one of the most multi-cultural towns in the south of England and people come to visit from around the world. Today the population of Reading is approximately 137,000 a huge difference from the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 Reading had a population of about 600.
Through history Reading has developed gradually into the town it is today, it began its life as a Saxon settlement when it was originally called Reada ingas when Reada a Saxon leader settled in the area in the 6th century.
Because Reading was on the main road between London and the West of England it prospered, it was a convenient place to stay and benefited from the travellers and also the pilgrims who came to the abbey. Two very important industries developed in this time, making cloth and there were many weavers, dyers and tailors living in the town. Also the leather industry, the leather was tanned then used to make shoes, saddles, hats and bottles.
In the 17th century the wool trade declined and by the early 18th century it was no longer one of the main industries. In its place many other industries grew, Pin making, wire making, nail making and brick and tile making just to name a few.
In the early 18th century the estimated population was about 4,500 and at the time of the first census in 1801 Reading had a population of just under 10,000. Gradually we were now seeing Reading emerge more like the town of today with more new industries developing all the time, it became known as the town of 3 b’s, Biscuits as Huntley & Palmer had opened a biscuit factory, Bulbs as John Sutton founded Sutton seeds and Breweries as another large industry was brewing. Still more industries developed, such as iron founding, also brick and tile making was an important industry where the growth was rapid.
Today sadly some the past industries have been lost to Reading, Suttons Seeds closed in 1976 and later in 1977 Huntley and Palmers biscuits closed and these were two major losses but as they left new and exciting companies moved to Reading from London as the commercial rents in London became far too expensive.
