About Windsor

Windsor is situated in the county of Berkshire approximately 20 miles west of London, south of the River Thames. This would be an ideal location to liaise with one of our special London escorts. Our escorts will make sure your time in Windsor both enjoyable and memorable.

The town is steeped in history but little is known about the early history of Windsor, although relics have been discovered dating back to the Bronze Age and Iron Age. There is evidence of an Anglo Saxon settlement and in fact the Anglo-Saxon chronicle was first to mention Windsor, which would have been the royal settlement, now called Old Windsor positioned about 3 miles from the modern town. The town of new Windsor has been privileged from the beginning and was given the rights of a ‘free borough’ when other towns had to pay substantial fees to the king.

In the Middle Ages New Windsor by 1332 was one of the fifty wealthiest towns. A large amount of the wealth came from the investment in the building of Windsor castle, which attracted London merchants to the town and provided growth in employment for the townsmen. Many Windsor people worked on the building of the Castle.

Windsor became a well known destination for pilgrims who came to visit the royal shrine of the murdered Henry V1. The pilgrims brought substantial sums of money to spend and as a result the town continued to prosper.

St George’s chapel in Windsor takes its place in history as the resting place for Henry VIII who is buried next to Jane Seymour who was the mother of his only legitimate son Edward VI.

Windsor still attracts many visitors but today they come with leisure in mind to visit the many historical places of interest as well as the beautiful gardens, walks and riverboat trips.

Another attraction is the shopping for which there are many gift shops around the Castle. The high street shopping consists of independent designer shops, numerous cafés and restaurants as well as well known high street stores such as Boots, M&S, Top shop H&M to name just a few.

What to See in Windsor

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle

The construction of Windsor Castle was begun by William the Conqueror over 900 years ago. The castle, in those days was a day’s march from London and has continuously been inhabited by the Royal Family and is said to be the largest occupied castle in the world.

As the Queen uses Windsor Castle as an official residence she very often spends her weekends there as well as using it when she undertakes her formal duties. The Queen will most certainly be in residence for a week in June when she will attend the Royal Ascot race meeting and also for the Order of the Garter service.

This castle is a very busy attraction and many parts of the castle are open to the public and when the Queen is in official residence the attraction of the Changing of the Guard is a spectacular event.
