A look at the villages history during your visit to Wraysbury would give you an insight into how the village has changed over the centuries. The village is on the very east of the county of Berkshire, with Heathrow airport very close and Windsor can be reached by boat along the River Thames from Wraysbury. Investigation by the Windsor and Wraysbury archaeological society in a field adjacent to the village church of St Andrews revealed evidence of human activity in Wraysbury from Neolithic times. Many hundreds of flint artefacts were found and are now in the Windsor Museum collection. The name of the village is Anglo Saxon in origin and means Wigraeds fort. The name was recorded in the 1086 Doomsday book as Wirecesberie, then one hundred years later in 1195 as Wiredesbur.
On Magna Carta Island in the parish of Wraysbury is the location of the sealing of the Magna Carta in1215. On the Ankerwycke estate in the village are the ruins of a Benedictine nunnery, founded in the reign of Henry 2nd. One of the 50 oldest oak trees in England can also be found on the estate, this Oak tree is around 2000 years old. Local legend says that Anne Boleyn once sat under the tree. The parish church of St Andrews is a Gothic structure from between Norman and Early English times, it is supposed to have been built by King John. The parish register dates from the year 1734 and the church is still in service today.
The village has changed considerably over the centuries, it now has two railway stations and Wraysbury Cricket Team can be seen playing regularly on the village green. One interesting past resident of Wraysbury was no other than Christine Keeler the young girl who was involved in the Profumo Affair. Another was David Gilmore, a member of the famous rock band Pink Floyd.
