About Ashendon
Ashendon is in the heart of the Chilterns, overlooking the picturesque Vale of Aylesbury. It is about nine miles west of Aylesbury and seven miles north of Thame. The village is in the tranquillity of the countryside yet within easy reach of the M40 and A41, Aylesbury, Bicester and Westcott Venture Park, and close to many national treasures such as the Rothschild's Waddesdon Manor, Claydon Manor and the Chilterns.
The name Ashendon is derived from the Old English for "Hill overgrown with ash trees". The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village as the property of the Grenville family, it was called Assedune. The original name refers to the fact that in Saxon times this area was completely forested and served as hunting land for the king.
In recent times the manor of Ashendon passed into the hands of the Marquis of Buckingham. Included in with the parish of Ashendon are the hamlets of Upper Pollicott and Lower Pollicott. The names of these hamlets derive from the Anglo Saxon Pol's Cottage.
In the less distant past, Ashendon was entirely a farming village and, at present, there is still much agricultural activity within the village. However, some of the farmhouses have been converted into private residences, the best example of this being Ashendon Farm and its barns. Although Ashendon is a small village, in comparison with many nearby Buckinghamshire villages, it has a pub, a recreational playing field, a church and a thriving social club.
The Gatehangers Inn, has its origins firmly established in local history as an old courthouse, the Gatehangers Inn was for many years named the Red Lion. In 1962 a local man hung a gate on the nearby allotments to stop the animals from straying. In good British tradition this event led to an annual celebration of food and beer and the birth of the Gatehangers Club and hence the name of the pub today. The Gatehangers offers some of the best value hotel accommodation in the area. You might just need bed and breakfast, or you can include a freshly cooked dinner in the restaurant and a few pints in the bar.
