If you live in Aston Clinton you are probably already aware of the long rich history of the village, the fact that Aston Clinton probably grew as a community where the Roman road, Akeman Street crossed the pre-historic Icknield Way. Then with the decline of the Roman Empire around the 4th century AD, the Saxons took over the settlement, these facts have been confirmed by the discovery of a Saxon cemetery in the area.
When the Normans invaded Britain in the 11th century the village was under the control of Wlwen, possibly a woman and a subject of King Edward the Confessor, Wlwen was most likely the predecessor of Edward of Salisbury, who later held the manor and was Henry Is standard bearer. The Domesday Book listed the village as Estone (Eastern Estate).
In the 13th century the manor was owned by the Clinton family and the name was changed to Aston de Clinton. The manor passed variously to Sir William de Farendon, the Montacutes, the Countess of Salisbury, the families of Hastings, Barrington, Gerard and Lake.
During the 19th century Sir Anthony de Rothschild purchased Aston Clinton House, enjoyed horse riding and hunting in the surrounding countryside and donated Anthony Hall to the village. The house was not ostentatious, even after a number of building projects, and was described by Lord Roseberry as the only Rothschild mansion that could be called a gentlemans house. Louisa, Anthony's wife, was initially disappointed with the Manor House. Aston Clinton is not the house I dreamt of, she wrote in her diaries. Nevertheless, her daughters, Constance and Annie, who spent much of their childhood there, and came to love the house. It was the setting for many entertainments, both formal and intimate. Here Sir Anthony hosted shooting parties at which the Prince of Wales was a frequent guest, while distinguished artists, such as Hall and Joachim, were invited to perform at the family's musical parties. Aston Clinton Manor House and the 1000-acre estate underwent major expansion and renovation work during this period. George Devey was appointed architect in 1864 and designed a large number of workers cottages, the park gates and it is believed the Lodge house.
Another claim to fame for Aston Clinton is the name of the famous car the Aston Martin. From 1904 to 1925 Aston Hill was a renowned motoring venue for hill climb racing. On the 4th April 1914 Lionel Martin made his first ascent of this hill in a singer car, because this car was so successful he registered it in his name, it was called "Aston Martin".
Not connected but related by motor racing is that, Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber lists Aston Clinton as his home in England where he lives with his partner Ann Neal.
Aston Hill is now an area of outstanding natural beauty throughout the year with many different flowers blooming throughout the year, bluebells in the spring, wild flowers in summer, and vibrant colours in autumn and fine toboggan runs in winter.
