Buckingham meaning “meadow of Bucca’s people” was said to have been founded by Bucca who was the leader of the very first Anglo Saxon settlers and that first settlement was located around the top of the loop in the Great Ouse river. This is today Hunter Street campus of the University of Buckingham.
Between the 7th and the 11th century was a confusing time as the town of Buckingham changed hands between Saxons and the Dames a number of times. In 1914 King Edward the Elder and a Saxon arty camped in Buckingham for four weeks during which time the local Danish Viking leaders were forced to surrender and as a result subsequently a fort was constructed which was in the location of the present Buckingham parish church.
Today you will discover that Buckingham has a variety of restaurants and pubs which are typical of a small market town together with a small number of local shops which are both national and independent. The towns market days are Tuesday and Saturday as well as a farmers market held on the first Tuesday of each month.
