The village has a rich history, The toponym (science behind the name) is derived from the Old English for "cottage for which rent is payable". The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village as Chauescote.
The oldest parts of the Village, which have remained largely unaltered, extend principally along Main Street, Church Street and Back Street. Today, Gawcott and Lenborough have essentially become dormitory villages with residents travelling to the nearby towns of Buckingham, Brackley and Milton Keynes to work. Some residents commute to Aylesbury and a few further afield to London. Although still surrounded on all sides by working farms, very few Gawcott and Lenborough people are now employed in farming.
