Claydon House, like many old English homes has its resident ghosts; the story of Sir Edward Verney who was a fervent Royalist during was selected by the King to be his standard bearer during the civil was. During the 1642 Battle of Edgehill he was killed by Roundheads, but even in death he refused to surrender the standard. When his dead hand could not be pulled from the pole it was cut off. The Royalists were determined to recapture the symbolic flag, and when they did so, it is said the severed hand was still attached! The rest of Sir Edwards body was never found, so only his hand was buried at the family home. Since that day it is said that many visitors, servants and family members have seen the spectre of the standard bearer, searching for his long-lost hand.
Middle Clayton is also home to an intriguing 13th century church situated in a superb position, directly beside the 18th century mansion of Claydon House and this is a National Trust church. All Saints is notable for its collection of monuments to the Verney family of Claydon House. The majority of the fabric of the church is 13th and 14th century, with some rebuilding between 1509-1519, by the Gifford family. A priest's door is set in the outer wall of the church, close to the library windows of Claydon House. Although this church is of interest simply for its 14th century architecture, the prime reason for visiting it is to see the wonderful collection of monuments to the Verney's and the Giffords. These are profuse, and adorn every part of the church. The best of these are to be found in the chancel. Against the north wall is a sizable 16th century brass to Roger Gifford, who had the chancel built. With Roger is Mary Nansicles, his wife. Below the couple are arrayed fully 13 sons and 7 daughters, the brass dates to 1543. There is so much to see in this church it will take a considerable amount of time and probably several visits to digest everything it has to offer.
