The population of Newport Pagnell in 1971 stood at 6,000 but by 2001 it had increased to 15,020, although today the town's growth has slowed down and its population is now approximately 16,000.
In the past the town has experienced many changes, for instance during the 19th century as communication and industrialization saw dramatic changes, the town also experienced many changes. The Newport Pagnell Canal was opened in 1814 and became part of the Grand Junction Canal, then more change came with the opening of the Newport Pagnell Railway in 1865, all this led to housing growth. As old industries in the area such as the production of pillow lace went into decline, new industries emerged, these were brewing, parchment making, mustard manufacture, milling and coach building. Salmons of Newport Pagnell played an important part in the history of the town, they were established in 1830 and became famous for their coaches, dog-carts and rally-carts, and these were sold worldwide. Since then the company changed names and ownership a number of times but finally in 1955 the company became Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd and the Aston Martin cars were produced there for a number of years and their cars became very popular top of the range sports cars.
In 1981 a bypass was built and together with other road changes the town has survived any major traffic problems and although the modern day demands for car parking and shop servicing has taken a toll on the historic frontages in the older parts of the town, conservation of the town's heritage plays an important role and reflects any changes in the town today.
To the north and the east of the town there are low lying attractive meadowlands and running through the town are the Great Ouse river and the Lovat river and this provides the area with an abundance of flora and wildlife. Ducks, geese, kingfishers and green woodpeckers can be frequently seen on the riverbanks and the town groups make a concerted effort to retain the beautiful surroundings of which they are justly proud. Although small, the town of Newport Pagnell is a beautiful and interesting town to visit, with ample attractions to keep any visitors and residents occupied.
