Oving with a population of 450 residents is a village and a civil parish within the Aylesbury Vale district in Buckinghamshire, with a post code of HP22. It is located about three and a half miles north east of Waddesdon, four miles south of Winslow. The village name is Anglo Saxon in origin, and means 'Ufa's people'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was recorded as Olvonge, though previously it was known as Ulfingas.
Situated in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire, 5 miles north of Aylesbury, Oving is built on a hill that dominates the surrounding countryside. It has been occupied by Romans, Saxons the Normans and into modern times. It probably had settlements of pre-Roman Celtic Britons. Oving has at least 1800 years of history, probably more.
Springs and wells provided the village of Oving with drinking water until quite recently. The water permeates through the Portland and Purbeck limestone and gathers in impermeable rock. The hill's springs provide the source of streams, which run south to the river Thame and north to the holy well in North Marston, this was famed for its curative properties in mediaeval times.
The springs rarely freeze or fail and are noted for their purity and clarity. Old water pumps can still be seen on church lane and also in the grounds that belong to Oving house.
Situated in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire, 5 miles north of Aylesbury, this 16th Century pub is an Oasis of good food, fine wine and real ales. The Black Boy at Oving was built in the early part of the 17th Century. The original building is still standing. The front door, bar area with beams, kitchen and living accommodation can still be seen. Various extensions and outbuildings were added in the 20th Century.
When planting shrubs in the rear gardens brick and stone footings from buildings long since removed are constantly found. The village pond, situated at the bottom of the pub gardens, was the only source of clean running spring water in the area during drought. Farmers with sheep, cattle or horses would walk their animals from miles away to the spring, which is still as abundant today.
