About Aveley
Averey is a parish in Thurrock, Essex and is located 16.3 miles east of Central London. The area has a rich history and Aveley was mentioned in the Domesday Book under several names, including Alvilea, Alvileia and Alvithelea.The most notable resident of Aveley is James Newton, the author of Amazing Grace. The village is well known in the paleontological world for being the place of discovery of several remains of prehistoric elephants, which are currently on display in the Natural History Museum of London.
The village of Aveley was a flourishing community from the 11th century to the 17th century, as attested by historic documents. The oldest numbers reflecting the population of the village indicate that in 1066 there were 30 people living there.
