About Bobbingworth
Bobbingworth is a civil parish in Essex and a part of the Epping Forest district. The county town of Chelmsford is located 11 miles west from Bobbingworth. The most prominent building in Bobbingworth is Blake Hall, which was transformed in the R.A.F. Station Headquarters during the Second World War (in September 1940). In the south part of the village was the Blake Hall tube station, which is nowadays closed.
The area of Bobbingworth has been inhabited since Saxon times and its population varied across the centuries, from 216 in the 18th century to 483 at the middle of the 20th century. The London-Ongar Railway runs across the south of the village and it was opened in 1865. Bobbingworth was served by the postal office of Moreton before its own sub-post office was setup in 1864.
The village has always been a rural parish and the most important activity of the people here has been agriculture. From the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 18th century, several large landowners were resident in Bobbingworth. The agricultural activities of the landowners are documented by several notebooks that contain a wealth of details.
