About Broxted
Broxted is a village in Essex and a part of the Uttlesford district. The village has its own parish council and a population of 526 (as of 2001). Previously known as Chawreth, Broxted is located on the road between Thaxted and Molehill Green.
The village is situated on a crest between the valleys of Chelmer and Cam and Stort, being the highest point for several miles around. Broxted was mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Brocchesheuot”. The most important building in the village is St. Mary’s Church, an impressive building that offers beautiful views over the village and its surroundings. The church was built in the 13th century and is home to several things of historic importance, including a fine oak pulpit, a processional cross. Two brick windows in the nave that date back to the 16th century and a weatherboarded belfry. Other significant buildings in Broxted are the Whitehall Hotel, which is a former church city hall from the 16th century and a Victorian Old Vicarage.
