Chigwell was originally a rural farming community, but over the years it has transformed into a largely suburban area. Charles Dickens frequented Chigwell and he described it as "the greatest place in the world with such a delicious old inn opposite the church and such beautiful forest scenery, such an out of the way rural place!" It is thought that the old inn that Dickens was referring to in his book 'Barnaby Rudge' was then called the Maypole Inn and today is called Ye Olde King's Head which is in Chigwell town.
The RAF had a base at Roding Valley Meadows between 1933 and 1958 and they provided a barrage balloon protection during World War II as well as being involved in the rollout of Britain's coastal nuclear early warning system which was in operation during the Cold War. The base is now closed but a part of the area has now become part of a local nature reserve and this follows the River Roding up to Loughton.
Chigwell has ample sports and leisure facilities with a David Lloyd Leisure Centre which is situated off Roding Road close to the M11 motorway, its facilities offer indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a gymnasium and swimming pools. Also in the area is Holes Place Health Club, Chigwell Golf Club and a Top Golf playing centre. Chigwell is also home to the training facilities for Tottenham Hotspur football club and throughout the summer months the club runs training sessions for the local youths on the Limes Farm estate.
The town has a postcode of IG7 and is situated 11.6 miles north east of Charing Cross and has two London Underground stations, which enable convenient commuting to London.
