About East Horndon
The village of East Horndon is located near Herongate, in the Essex within the Borough of Brentwood. The village has its own parish and it is located on the east side of the Thorndon Hall Park. The most important building in the village is the Church of East Horndon, which is dedicated to All Saints. The church has a view towards the River Thames and was built in the 15th century, on the base of a Norman church. The All Saints Church of East Horndon was built by the Tyrell family and its highlight is the Lady Alice Tyrell’s tomb slab, a masterfully crafted memorial, one of the most beautiful ones in England. The church has not been in use since 1970.
There are two legends related to the All Saints Church. The first one is about Sir James Tyrell, who died near the church trying to slay a dragon. The second legend tells that the head or the heart of Henry VIII beheaded wife, Anne Boleyn, is buried here.
