About Great Parndon
Formerly a civil parish in Essex, Great Parndon is nowadays an electoral ward, after the parish had been incorporated to the nearby town of Harlow. The village is located west of Harlow and the earliest mention of its population mentions only 18 inhabitants in 1086. It has been confirmed that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as Mesolithic remains were discovered, along with Bronze Age pottery. In 1953, archaeologists discovered the remains of a red cement Roman floor.
The village of Great Parndon was formed from a series of hamlets and farms until the 20th century. Several manor houses dating from the Middle Ages were located at Taylifers, Sumners, Katherins and Gerounds.
