About Langley
The village of Langley is situated seven miles away from the town of Saffron Walden, in the county of Essex. The documented history of the village goes back to Anglo-Saxon times, but it is almost certain that the area was inhabited even before the arrival of the Saxons. Archaeological evidence points to the existence of Iron Age settlements in the areas and the presence of the Romans was also attested. A Roman-British burial mound was discovered and excavated in the area in the 19th century, together with some parts of a Roman road.

The church in Langley was probably built in the 13th century by Robert Fitzsweyn, who erected the building over the remains of an ancient Norman church. The building of the church has been rebuilt and enlarged multiple times throughout the centuries, with the tower being built in the 14th century and the hammer beam roof being installed somewhere in the 15th century. Later in the 19th century, a vestry and a porch were added to the original building.
The population in the village of Langley evolved from merely 22 people in the 16th century to several hundred at the middle of the 20th century. The area has largely been a rural one and it remained so even after the Second World War. Some changes occurred in the life of the village in the second half of the 20th century, with the advent of electricity. Today, Langley is a picturesque small village with a rural and peaceful atmosphere and it attracts people from Saffron Walden and other Essex towns, who are looking to spend a day out in the beautiful English countryside.
