Another famous inhabitant of Thurrock was Captain Kidd who was convicted of piracy and hanged on May 23, 1701 and as a warning for future 'would be pirates' his body was gibbeted and displayed in an iron cage over the Thames River at Tilbury Point, for all to see.
Horndon-on-the-Hill was once famous for its 11th century mint and its 15th century wool market and during the 15th century the area was quite wealthy.
The area of Thurrock has always been renowned for the extraction of clay, aggregates and most famously the extraction of huge amounts of chalk from the area of West Thurrock for use in the cement industries.
