About Barkway
Barkway is located in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. It is a small village that has quite an extensive history. It also doubles as a civil parish. The area receives many visitors from three towns in particular; the City of London, which is 35 miles away, Royston 5 miles away, and Cambridge which is 15 miles away. These are all larger places so the visitors bring a more worldly view to things when they come through.
Barkway dates back many centuries, it was even recorded in the infamous Domesday Book. During the years it was recorded it was regarded as Birchwig, which in Old English meant Birch Way. The village has a variety of buildings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Their location speaks tons of what the area was like hundreds of years ago. They are mostly located on High Street, which was used as a direct route from London to Cambridge. One of Barkways oldest buildings is an 800 year old church. However, this village had a different one prior to this church; in fact the village residents have made it a priority to have a house of worship for over 1,000 years.
In 2001 the village had a small population of only 656, although it has surely grown since then. Few residents, ultimately means, even fewer notable or famous residents. However, there was one rather well known individual by the name of Sir Humphrey de Trafford. He became known for owning many winning racehorses. In 1926 he and his family moved into the Newsells Park Estate, where he continued to live until his death in 1971. Today Newsells Park Estate is a Stud Farm. But the village has another large estate which has remained a residency. Cokenach is the other estate; and it draws visitors to its country club, dedicated to the sport of cricket.
