About Barley
In North Hertfordshire, England there is a small village by the name of Barley. And as some might suggest from hearing the name, the local crop is in fact barley. Oddly enough the villages name however, is not named after the wheat. It was recorded in the Domesday Book as Berlei. The actual name Barley derived from a field belonging to a Saxon Lord. The field was once part of a forest which was cleared for the Lord; it was named Beoras Ley. Barley has an extensive history. It has served as a settlement for inhabitants for over 3,000 years. Archeologists have even discovered Bronze, and Iron Age artifacts in the hills and to the north of the village. The land was also a part of the Roman Empire when they conquered the world.
Barley is a small village with only about 660 inhabitants. It is also a civil parish. The official village patron is St. Margaret of Antioch, and a Norman church was built to honor her in the 12th century. It still stands today. Barley has many historical landmarks. Centuries ago, small, rounded single standing structures were used to enclose disruptive drunks. They were used as holding cells and called Lock Ups. A 17th century lock-up stands here; only four other villages in Hertfordshire have surviving lock-ups. Barley joins Anstey, Ashwell, Buntingford, and Shenley in this exclusive club. Another historical building is a Town House built during the Tudor era.
Notable residents include William Warham and Thomas Willett before he became mayor of New York City, in the United States of America. He lived in a historical home that he named Willetts Cottage; the cottage was demolished in 1972. Reverend Charles Oswald Miles served as the Curate from 1882 until 1885; he spent his term assisting the parish vicar, and rector.
Barley has a great number of daily visitors. Although the village has a long standing history the atmosphere is rather modern and the attitudes of the residents are as well.
