Borehamwood is situated in the south of Hertfordshire, between the M25 and M1 motorways. The town has strong links with the local Elstree film studios where "Eastenders" and "Top of the Pops", "Star Wars" and "Saving Private Ryan" were filmed. One of the most memorable films made was The Shining 1980, starring Jack Nicholson where a family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter and an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence. This is a classic.
Every year there’s the Elstree & Borehamwood Civic Festival when there is 2 weeks of shows and events which kicked off with a Saturday Carnival Parade. The carnival parade started at Borehamwood Brook Road car park with various floats from local schools and youth clubs, theatre groups, shop and restaurant owners. During the first week of the festival there was a BBC band concert, quiz night, baby show, and an annual Elstree Film Evening. The BBC Elstree Concert band presented a mix of live music from films and stage.
The second week of the festival included the Elstree Productions' show of Waxworks and there was an Elstree Film Evening at Elstree Studios.
The Elstree Film Festival began with screening of Watership Down at The Reel Cinema and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was shown as the final film.
One of the closing events was the half marathon and fun run and the 2 weeks of celebration came to an end with a barbeque, and fireworks display.
