About Great Amwell
Great Amwell is actually only half of an entire village called Amwell. Amwell was divided into two parts, one being Great Amwell, and the other being Little Amwell. It is located twenty miles from the City of London. Its closest neighbor is Ware, being only a mile and a half away. The village itself is located within the borders of the County of Hertfordshire in England.
The village has a church available for local use, and its, official patron is St. John the Baptist. Oddly enough, overlooking the church is a large mound. It sits on the top of a hill and its the only remaining evidence of an ancient fortification which protected the area. The village also serves as the resting place for many other notable individuals, who preferred this small village even in their death. William Warner, a historian and poet was buried in the village churchyard. Harold Abrahams Chariots of Fire is also resting here. But among the most important individuals was Richard Warren. He was the co-signer of the Mayflower Compact, after being a passenger on the ship in 1620. As if that werent enough, he married Elizabeth Walker and the two are the great ancestors of U.S. Presidents, Ulysses S. Grant and the great Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
