Hunsdon is an old village and civil parish in Hertfordshire England. The village was first registered in the Doomsday book 1086. There are still many old properties in the village and the centre contains many that date back to at least the 15th century. In the 1550s Queen Elizabeth 1st spent much of her childhood at Hunsdon House. She later gave the property to her cousin, Sir Henry Carey, creating him his title of Lord Hunsdon. After several changes of ownership through from Lord Willoughby in 1653, Matthew Bluck in 1671 and Josiah Nicholson in 1743 it was inherited by Nicholson Calvert in 1759. It was the Calvert family who made a number of major changes to the structure of Hunsdon village and the surrounding area during their ownership, finally they left Hunsdon when the house and Manor were sold in 1858. Recent archaeological work has uncovered the old moat, in which many very old shoes were found around the grounds, they also emptied an old cesspit in which was found amongst other items, the skeleton of a dog which must have fallen down the Shute. Attempts at landscaping have also revealed remains of early structures which stopped the gardening activities.
Hunsdon has plenty of charm and in 2011 was voted the village of the year for East Hertfordshire. The village has its own website for the close rural community of approximately 1095 inhabitants.
