About Little Berkhamsted
Little Berkhamsted is located within the borders of the County of Hertfordshire. The village itself dates back to the Saxon age, but some scholars believe it dates back even further. The village is best remembered for being the location of a very important victory in English history. The village of Berkhamsted was the location in which King William the Conqueror accepted the surrender of the City of London. This occurred after the Battle of Hastings.
King William the Conqueror was also the man who ordered the making of the infamous Domesday Book, in which Berkhamstead was recorded as being Berchehastede. Its name derived from the Saxon language, and suggests that a living settlement was originally constructed in the woodland area. The trees prevalent in this forest were Birches which explains where the Berch in the villages original name came from. The village has also gone by two other names during the course of its history. Berkhamsted Parva is the lesser used designation, as opposed to East Berkhamsted which is used more often.
The village has one attraction which is the main source of its touristic activities. It comes in the form of a landmark built in 1789. Strattons Folly is a Georgian Prospect tower that has been giving its name in honor of its builder, John Stratton. Although it is a staple in the village, no one knows exactly why the tower was built. For centuries villagers have maintained a myth that suggested John Stratton built his famous tower because he was an admiral in the Navy. The myth goes on to explain that Stratton wanted to overlook his ships while they were on the River Thames. The myth would be a practical one if true, but scholars believe that the real reason for its erection is far simpler. They believe Stratton just wanted to enjoy the views his Folly made available to him.
