Much Hadham is a village in east Hertfordshire, formerly known as Great Hadham and it is known as one of Hertfordshire's oldest and most picturesque villages. The village runs along the length of the main high street. There are a small amount of remaining retail outlets which consist of a small supermarket with post office, a hairdresser, two garages and a nursery. The good news is that there are two pubs.
Now the residential houses still continue the old names of The Old Bakery Collarmaker’s House and The Forge Museum
The fifteenth century Red Lion coaching inn has now been converted into houses. It used to be a stopping point on the old London to Cambridge road and legend has it that a tunnel connected the pub to St Andrew’s which served as an escape route for the clergy. The skeleton of an eighteen-year-old woman was discovered bricked up in a fireplace in the inn. It is thought she died after being incarcerated, some time during the nineteenth century.
The Crommer Windmill is known to be Hertfordshire’s last remaining post mill and the only windmill open to the public. It was restored back to working order and is open every Sunday from mid May and September and is situated on the B1037 at Cromer, Hertfordshire.
The Forge Museum and Victorian Cottage Garden is set in a Grade II listed building and has displays about blacksmithing and farriery. The working blacksmith can be seen 4 days per week.
If you enjoy an interesting walk and a stop off for a pint there are a number of pubs to choose from. Visitors and walkers can walk along many footpaths and bridleways and walk by the river to see the spring bluebells in flower.
There is a ford in the village centre which claims to be the longest ford in Europe. The B1004 makes its way down Winding Hill goes into the village at the bridge over the River Ash. There is an alternative route, which takes you along a narrow lane and this is where you have to negotiate the Ford. The ford is where the river meets the road and can be great fun to drive through, but for those of you that are more cautious you may want to just take a look and use the dry alternative route.
