Verulamium was built by the Romans alongside the town called Verlamchester or Wæclingacaester after the withdrawal of the Romans it then became known as St.Albans. It has a long Celtic history of settlement which was close to St.Albans at Prae Hill. The mediaeval town was built on the hill around the Benedictine foundation of St.Albans Abbey and this was the spot where tradition has it that St.Alban the first British Christian martyr was beheaded and the first draft of the Magna Carta was drawn up.
If you are interested in the history of St.Albans there is a large Tapestry inside St.Albans Cathedral which tells the whole story and history and describes the struggle with the building work and the problems with the decisions made at the time as to where the money should be used.
The tapestry shows the rebuilding under Abbot Hugh that begun, but then there were further problems with money. In addition his successor Richard de Wallingford, a brilliant man, was more interested in astronomy than in the building work.
St.Albans is within close proximity to London which has made it a popular filming location. In Foyle’s War Fishpool Street running from Romeland to St Michael’s village was made to represent Hastings in some episodes. The 19th Century gatehouse of the former prison near the station appeared in the title sequence of the TV series Porridge staring Ronnie Barker.
