Most of the surrounding area of Bagshot is owned by the Ministry of Defence and it is also part of Windsor Great Park in the Green Belt that surrounds London. During the Elizabethan times Bagshot was a prosperous village due to its position on the main London to the West Country Road, The Great South West Road, known today as the A30. Bagshot developed its services during this period, providing inns for the stagecoach passengers and stables to provide coaches with fresh horses, in order to continue their journey. Due to its prosperity, the Great South West Road gained its share of notorious highwaymen, one of these was William Davis, who was a local farmer; he lived near what is known locally as the Jolly Farmer roundabout. William Davis drew attention to himself by always paying his debts in gold which raised suspicion and he was eventually caught at the White Hart Inn in Bagshot and later hanged.
