About Camberley
Camberley is just 31 miles southwest of central London conveniently in the corridor between the M3 and M4 motorways. The Camberley suburbs are Crawley Hill, Heatherside, Old Dean, Yorktown and Frimley Road and in total Camberley has a population of approximately 30,155. Most of Camberley’s town centre is host to The Mall shopping centre which has been built around the Main Square and a distinct feature of the Main Square is the large clock which can be found in the centre of the complex which also houses a lift up to a popular cafe. The sandy topsoil made the area unsuitable for farming so it remained mostly undeveloped. As it now stands the roots of Camberley centred around the building of the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst in 1812. The settlement known as “New Town” emerged in the area around the college which in 1831 was renamed Yorktown, after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany and at that time the population was 702. The Staff College was established to the east of the Academy where a property developer built the nearby Cambridge Hotel, so at that time the surrounding area became known as Cambridge Town. In 1877 in order to avoid confusion with the true Cambridge by the General Post Office, it was renamed Camberley and this renaming of Camberley was actually mentioned in the 1963 film adaptation of ‘Lord of the Flies’.
Today, the modern Camberley has The Mall shopping centre anchored by stores such as House of Fraser, The Atrium leisure facility including a nine-screen cinema, bowling alley, health and fitness club, cafes and restaurants all opened by November 2008. There are 217 ‘design-led’ apartments divided into three areas within the complex (named Centro, Aspect and Courtyard). Park Street has been pedestrianised and landscaped as part of the development. Camberley also has its own theatre and football club and was featured together with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in a Doctor Who comic story called “The Warkeeper’s Crown”. There is a familiar landmark in Camberley which is a concrete pipe white elephant which is situated on the A30 approaching The Meadows roundabout.
The Major employers in the area include Siemans which moved there in 2007 and Sun Microsystems, whose UK headquarters is located just across the Hampshire border in Minley, also Krispy Kreme UK are based in the town centre.
