Up until the middle of the 1860s Cranley was spelt this way, it was The Post Office who succeeded in getting the spelling altered in order to avoid confusion with the nearby Crawley, which is in West Sussex. The growth of Cranleigh began when improvements to transport were made. The Wey and Arun Canal opened in 1816 and this passed just a few miles west of the village. That route linked London - via the Thames and the Wey and Littlehampton - via the Arun.
