Dunsfold is surrounded by arable land, some of this land is home to some prizewinning Aberdeen Angus cattle.
During the middle ages Dunsfold was a site for iron-working, then later in history the village benefited from the construction of the Way and Arun canal as well as the building of Dunsfold Aerodrome.
Dunsfold Aerodrome was built by the Canadian Army as an emergency landing airfield during the Second World War. Immediately after the war the airfield was used to repatriate many prisoners of war. By 1946 the airfield was declared inactive but by 1948 it was in use again as part of the Berlin Airlift. The Hawker Aircraft Company then leased the site in 1950. Today some of the airfield is used as a Young Drivers Track by many driving schools and instructors to give under 17 year olds the opportunity to learn to drive and hundreds of young people now have their first driving experience at the Top Gear location, before they actually take to the road.
The owners of Dunsfold Park put forward an application to transform the site into a new town with approximately 2,600 eco homes, this application has been rejected as being undeliverable or not ambitious enough to meet the high environmental and affordability standards set by the Government. This has at the moment given many local residents peace of mind as they had campaigned to stop this development.
Dunsfold still remains a beautiful country village giving a warm welcome to all its visitors.
