The name of the village Clandon or Clanedune dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and the meaning was clean down or open downland. This area made a good settlement area, due to the convenient water supply that emerged where chalk met the lower lying clay. Chertsey Abbey were the early owners of East Clandon as far back as 1066 and it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Clanedun with a value of £6, but on the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, brought a change of ownership. Henry the VIII gave East Clandon Manor to Sir Anthony Browne in 1544.
Over the centuries the village has had several owners and the Hatchlands House, park and some of the land were given to the National Trust when the owner at the time, Captain Goodhart-Rendal died in 1959. The remainder of the estate was inherited by two relatives, the new owners sold the majority of the houses in 1970 and very few now remain in their possession.
The very popular TV series called Catweazle was filmed in East Clandon, on Home Farm and anyone that remembers the series will also remember the stunning countryside views that brought the series to life.
