Egham predates 666AD which is when Chertsey Abbey was founded and its lands included Ecga’s Ham from which the name Egham is derived. The town appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Egeham. Egham, originally a village was an ancient parish which covered land totalling 7,435 acres within the counties of Berkshire and Surrey. This incorporated Egham Hill, Coopers Hill, Virginia Water, Englefield Green, Shrubs Hill, Egham Hyther, Runnymede and a large portion of Windsor Great Park as well as Egham itself.
In 1215 the manor of Egham which included Runnymede was owned by Chertsey Abbey, then around 1540 after the dissolution it became the property of the Crown. The famous Magna Carta was sealed at nearby Runnymede in 1215 and this is commemorated by a memorial which was built in 1957 by the American Bar Association. It is situated at the foot of Cooper’s Hill which is a small rise adjacent to the Thames floodplain. There is a Sculpture of King John and Baron Fitzwalter in the act of sealing the Magna Carta which is located in Church Road in the centre of the town. Also there is another memorial at the top of the hill in nearby Englefield Green commemorating all Commonwealth air force personnel who were killed in World War II and is the first new-built British building to be listed in the post-war era. Administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission this memorial is freely open to the public all year-round.
