About Esher
Esher is a town situated in the Surrey borough of Elmbridge in the South East of England. This is a prosperous part of the Greater London Urban area close to the River Mole and is largely suburban in character and is only approximately 14 miles south west of Charing Cross. It lies on the A307, Porsmouth Road and its railway station is served by the Waterloo via Weybridge service which connects Esher town to London Waterloo. It is home to the Sandown Park Racecourse which is situated close to the station. Esher appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Aissela and Aissele and was held in parts by the Abbey of the Cross in Normandy, William de Waterville, Reginald, Hugh do Port, Odard Balistarius who was more than likely a crossbowman. It grew into a stagecoach stop on the London to Portsmouth road and this was later known as the A3 road although a bypass was constructed in the mid-1970s.
During the 16th century the town remained a wealthy area and King Henry VIII commandeered the area as a royal hunting ground. Claremont mansion was built by Clive of India later to become a royal residence used by Queen Victoria, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg also had residence there until he became King of the Belgians. The mansion was lent to the exiled French King Louis-Philippe and his consort Queen Marie-Amelie after the revolution of 1848 by Queen Victoria.
The area can boast a number of famous residents such as George Harrison of the Beatles who owned a house Called Kinfauns during the 1960, Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees also owned a house in Esher called The Firs during 1970s to 2004 and this was sold after his death. That house was where the hit single ‘Juliet’ was written and recorded by Maurice and Robin for brother Robin’s solo album project in the 1980s.
Esher is presented by the media as a middle class part of suburbia and Monty Python referred to Esher at least three times in the series Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
