About Godstone
Godstone is in the county of Surrey and is located approximately six miles east of Reigate at the junctions of the A22 and A25 major roads and is also close to the M25. The heart of Godstone are two centres which are now conservation areas, they are Church Town and Godstone Green. Church Town is quiet and secluded with old timber framed buildings. The Old Packhouse pub dates from the 15th century and is the oldest timber framed building in the town. The fashionable material for house building in the 18th century was brick and Church End and Church House opposite the church are two very fine examples.St Nicholas Church is the dominating building in Church Town and the North aisle was built in approximately 1845. The restoration of the church in 1872-3 by Gilbert Scott involved the widening of the church arch and inserting a new north side to the chancel, new windows to the nave and east end, this added the south aisle. While Sir George Gilbert was working on St Nicholas Church he also designed St Mary’s almshouses next to the church for Mrs Mabel Hunt of Wonham House, this was in memory of her only daughter who died at the age of sixteen. This building was built in a Victorian Tudor/gothic style and included eight self-contained houses which incorporated a beautiful little chapel which was dedicated to St Mary, this chapel and the gables compose a very pretty hamlet.
Bullbeggars Lane links the two parts of Godstone, the original village around St Nicholas Church suffered greatly during the great plague of 1342 with the victims being buried in two ‘plague pits’ in Bullbeggars Lane, the sexes were kept separate so men and women were interred in separate pits.
Godstone Green became a busy centre of roads and vehicles during the introduction of wheeled traffic in the 16th century and this era spawned the establishment of Godstone’s numerous inns.
A significant number of houses built in brick appeared during the 18th century especially a row in the High Street. In the 19th century The Pond at Godstone Green was used as a horse-pond with a sloping bank to which the Wagoner’s drove their horses.
Today Godstone is a lovely getaway which even has its own Vineyards where you can purchase wine from the premises on Quarry Road.
