In its early history Weybridge was simply a river crossing, but in 1537 Henry the VIII built Oatlands Palace and this was where he married his 5th wife Catherine Howard. Oatlands Palace was demolished in 1650 and the bricks from its walls were used to line the then new Wey Navigation canal. The Oatland Park Hotel now occupies part of the original site of the Palace. Monument Hill is close to the town centre and at the bottom of this hill you will find a monument to the Duchess of York. This monument was erected by public subscription in 1820 and the Duchess is buried in St James's Churchyard in Weybridge.
Weybridge is home to the world's first leisure campsite which was set up close to the town in 1901 and it forms part of the early history of the Camping and Caravanning Club.
Weybridge Heath is home to many rare species of insects, particularly ants, the famous entomologist, Horace Donisthorpe, visited Weybridge Heath to investigate the ant colony there. Over recent years the area had been allowed to become overgrown but recently the Surrey Wildlife Trust established a clearance plan in an attempt to restore this valuable habitat.
Weybridge has a superb choice of restaurants, bars and nightclubs, so whatever you're choice of evening and night time entertainment is, you will find something in Weybridge to meet your needs.
