The origins of the first Globe theatre can be chased back to the late 16th century, during the reign of Elizabeth. The original Globe was constructed by Actor / Manager James Burbage in 1576, the first purpose built Theatre of its kind in London. The original site selected was Shoreditch.
In the later part of the 16th century William Shakespeare joined the residential troupe, known initially as the chamberlain’s and later the King’s Men. In 1613 after many years of successful performances, the globe caught fire and within a very short time burnt to the ground. The theatre was never reconstructed and the original site was use to construct tenements in 1664.
The project to rebuild Shakespeare’s Globe was instigated by the American actor, director and producer Sam Wanamaker subsequent to his first visit to London in the later part of the 1940’s. Over Twenty years later he founded what was to become the Shakespeare Globe Trust, committed to the reconstruction of the theatre and the development of an education centre and permanent exhibition. After 23 years spent tirelessly fundraising, advancing research into the appearance of the original Globe and planning the reconstruction with the Trust’s architect Theo Crosby, Sam Wanamaker died, the site having been secured, the exhibition undercroft structurally complete and a limited number of timber bays of the theatre in place. Three and a half years later the theatre was completed.
The Theatre opens its doors between April and October with productions based on the works of Shakespeare, his contemporaries and new and exciting writers. The Globe Theatre and its company, on an annual basis, rediscover the dynamic relationship between the audience and the actor in this unique space. Audiences indulge in the experience of the wooden O by either sitting in a gallery or standing informally as a groundling in the yard, replicating how audiences would have watched the productions some 400 years ago.

The present Cathedral, the fourth to occupy this site, was designed by the then court architect Sir Christopher Wren and constructed between 1675 and 1710 after its antecedent was destroyed during the Great Fire of London.
Its architectural and artistic importance is reflected in the tenacity of the five monarchs who oversaw and were responsible for its construction. Insisting that as London’s foremost church it should be as stunning and impressive as their private palaces.
Since the inaugural service for the newly rebuilt cathedral was held here in 1697, Wren's masterpiece has been London’s focal point where people and events of overwhelming importance to the country have been celebrated.
Many Important services have been held at St Paul’s and include the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill, the Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, the peace services marking the end of the First and Second World Wars. Many regal services and celebrations have also been held here and include, the Service of Remembrance and the Commemoration for the 11th September 2001, the 80th and 100th birthdays of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer. Most recently, the thanksgiving services for both the Golden Jubilee and 80th Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen.
Over the centuries, St Paul’s has transformed to reflect the capital’s shifting tastes and viewpoints. New decoration has been added and existing, removed or changed. Services have been restructured, and different areas have been put to new uses. Today, the chronicle of the nation is etched in the carved stone of its pillars and arches and is celebrated in its works of art and monuments.
Visitors still test the acoustics in the Whispering Gallery and the 1695 organ once played by the composer Mendelssohn is still in use. In the crypt there are effigies and fragments of stone that pre-dates the Cathedral, relics of a medieval world. Wren’s original vision included the Jean Tijou’s designed beautiful wrought iron gates of 1700 which today still separate the quire from the ambulatory.
