About Beckton
Situated in the London Borough of Newham, Beckton’s boundaries are the A13 trunk road to the north, Barking Creek to the east, the Royal Docks to the south and Prince Regent Lane (known as Custom House) to the west. Today’s Beckton is divided into East, Mid, North West, South Beckton and Cyprus. Cyprus was named after the British capture of Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, this capture occurred as the original estate was being built.The north and east of the Royal Docks was formerly heavily industrialised and was then the location of Beckton Gas Works which was the largest gasworks in Europe. The area was names after Simon Adams Beck who was the governor of the Gas Light and Coke Company when the work began on that site in November 1868. There were a number of by-products produced on an adjacent site such as mothballs, fertilisers, dyes and ink. When Britain switched from town gas to North Sea gas in 1969 the gasworks closed.
After the Second World War there were a large number of prefabs built in Beckton in order to house the people who had been made homeless by the war. All the streets were names after general and war heroes but during the redevelopment of North Beckton in the 1980 all the prefabs were demolished with the exception of Eisenhower Drive.
Today, Beckton has been redeveloped as part of the Docklands project and now comprises of mainly housing and a number of out-of-town shopping centres. The architecture is mainly post-1982 but there are still small areas of Victorian housing which has survived in Winsor Terrace, these house were originally built as accommodation for the Gas Light and Coke Company staff.
The area has been used in the production of several notable films, such as the James Bond film in 1981 ‘For your eyes only’, the UK movie ‘Max Hedroom’. The Gasworks were used in the filming of ‘Full Metal Jacket, the concrete structures were painted with Vietnamese script and then strategically dynamited so as to resemble war-torn Hue. Today Retail Parks cover most of the Gasworks site.
